Accounts Payable Basics: Lay a Strong Foundation

Accounts payable is a many faceted function. Those coming into it—whether to work or manage—are often given little training and must “learn on the job.” While there’s nothing wrong with on-the-job training, and, in fact, a lot to recommend it, it’s still crucial for career development that the foundations of the function be fully understood. That’s why we’ve developed this special session. This event is designed to bring those who are new to the function up-to-speed as well as illustrate some of the finer points for those with tons of experience under their belt.

Please join us for a quick 60 minutes with AP Now’s editorial director and author of 15 business books, Mary S, Schaeffer. After this session you’ll be able to:

• Review the basics of any accounts payable function (invoice handling, checks, POs, rush checks, T&E, regulatory issues and fraud);

• Identify 8 silly, easily-fixed mistakes often made in accounts payable departments (and avoid them);

• Differentiate between 3 problems that arise when PO best practices are not followed;

• Grasp the 5 often-overlooked ways rush checks cause problems;

• Explain why after-the-fact POs may make sense;

• Explore 2 alternatives to those awful paper checks; and

• Avoid the accounts payable black hole!

There will be plenty of time at the end of the session to ask questions. Once you've registered, send your e-mail questions in advance to publisher@ap-now.com and they will be included in the program. You'll also have a chance to post questions during the Webinar.

About our Expert: Mary Schaeffer has the inimitable ability to find accounts-payable-related solutions that really work—without making a major dent in the bottom line. Armed with a degree in math and a graduate degree in finance, she takes a “roll up your sleeves and dig into the details” approach to finding solutions to those problems that cause migraines for CFOs, controllers, and managers.

Fifteen years spent researching and writing about payment issues gives Mary Schaeffer a unique vantage point. Combine that with an almost equal amount of time spent in the corporate trenches of several large finance and treasury departments and you’ll see why she’s become known as America’s leading accounts payable expert.

A wide variety of institutions have taken advantage of her unique expertise: John Wiley & Sons has published over a dozen of her books; CRYSTALLUS, Inc. (www.ap-now.com) relies on her know-how to direct its professional publication, training, and consulting business; and the AICPA features her articles in its Corporate Finance Insider. The New York Times recently interviewed her on T&E and let’s not overlook the long list of organizations that have turned to her for best practice guidance of their accounts payable function and training of their accounts payable staff.

Ms. Schaeffer has a BS in Mathematics from York College (CUNY) and a MBA in Finance from New York University.
